Flying Training Cost
There are many factors to consider when it comes to the cost of learning to fly. Luckily for members of the UK Armed Forces there are many ways to help with the cost of training. There are other benefits of learning to fly at RAF Marham Aero Club when compared to a civilian provider too. All of which are detailed below.

Our costing model is based on 'pay for what you use', in other words, the membership costs cover the cost of the club existing as an entity and providing the facilities that we have on offer. That means that the cost of flying is only based on the cost of running the aircraft and so is as low as feasible.

Up front costs:

Membership:

-
£19.50 per month for SNCO and above (inc all civilian members).
-
£10.00 per month for JNCO and below.

Aircraft Rental:

G-BYYG/G-BKAM

-
£157 per hour solo
-
£187 per hour dual*

*Our instructors are able to claim the £30 per hour fee from MAC when not on duty or in uniform. Even though the spirit of the club is voluntary there is still significant cost to the individual in acquiring an FI rating, even when already a QFI. The claiming of a small fee goes someway to offset that cost and enables us to attract more instructors to assist with the club.

Other costs:

-
CAA ground exam fee - £20 per exam
-
CAA Class 2 medical - paid directly to the CAA Aeromedical Examiner ~£200-300
-
Training manuals and equipment (logbook, charts, nav equipment etc) - available online ~£200
-
Flight Radio Telephony Operators License - Not available at MAC but we can point you in the direction of places that offer it. Costs vary but expect ~£200
-
CAA license fees - Paid directly to the CAA on completion of Skills Test. See CAA website for details.

What can you do to offset the cost?

-
ELCAS - We are an ELCAS approved training provider and as such, qualifying service members can use their ELCAS allowance to pay for flying training.

-
SLC - Standard Learning Credits of £175 per year can also be used towards your training. Speak to the RAF Marham Learning Centre (or your equivalent) for information and eligibility.

Other benefits of learning at RAF Marham Aero Club

-
No landing fees at RAF Marham
-
No approach fees at RAF Marham
-
No charge for ground school and low cost CAA exams

Between the use of ELCAS and SLC, the non-profit nature of our club, the lack of landing/approach fees and the low cost per flight hour of our aircraft, you can rest assured that members will be able to learn to fly for the lowest price possible when compared with civilian organisations.
