Military Credits
QSPs and to a lesser extent graduates of EFT/BFJT and EFT ground School are awarded certain credits towards civilian licenses. These are all laid down in CAP 2254.
The big take away with any credit scheme, is that in almost all cases, you have to meet the requirement for license issue, and pass the test. The credits are mostly to do with the training towards the skills test.
For PPL this is essentially meaningless as there isn't a formal requirement to undertake a set syllabus and you still need to meet the requirements as per FCL.210A:
(a) Applicants for a PPL(A) shall have completed at least 45 hours of flight instruction in aeroplanes or TMGs, 5 of which may have been completed in an FSTD, including at least:
(1) 25 hours of dual flight instruction; and
(2) 10 hours of supervised solo flight time, including at least 5 hours of solo cross-country flight time with at least 1 cross-country flight of at least 270 km (150 NM), during which full stop landings at 2 aerodromes different from the aerodrome of departure shall be made.
In essence, take the 9 exams as per the student pilot group info,. get a medical, do training as required to meet test standard and so long as you have the above requirements you can take the test and get a PPL with SEP rating.
Prefect T1 and UAS students have slightly different credits. Refer to the CAP for more info.
Aerobatic rating: From the CAP: EFTGs, BFJT and BFT graduates that have received theoretical knowledge as specified in AMC No 1 to FCL.800 are to submit evidence for the award of the aerobatic rating to their licenses.
A copy of your logbook courses completed page, or your EFT graduation certificate will suffice for a free aeros rating! Recommend applying for this at the same time as initial PPL issue.
IMC/IR(R) Rating: Free with a Green IR - https://www.caa.co.uk/general-aviation/pilot-licences/applications/ratings/apply-for-an-instrument-meteorological-conditions-imc-or-instrument-rating-restricted-ir-r/#
Night Rating: Free if you meet the requirements - https://www.caa.co.uk/general-aviation/pilot-licences/applications/ratings/night-rating-for-aeroplanes/
Recommend applying for SEP, Aeros, Night, and IR(R) rating at the same time on initial application.
You start to get bigger wins are you go further forward in your civilian license career.
ATPL exams can be completed without having undertaken the training course for them, which is:
1. Applicants for an ATPL(A) who complete their theoretical knowledge instruction at a modular course shall:
(a) hold at least a PPL(A) issued in accordance with Annex 1 to the Chicago Convention; and complete at least the following hours of theoretical knowledge instruction:
(1) for applicants holding a PPL(A): 650 hours;
So a QSP can just buy the learning material and do the tests without having to "log" 650hrs on theoretical training with an ATO. Bristol Ground School https://www.bristol.gs/atpla/ for the win with these. Just as per PPL, I'd also recommend a question bank https://www.atplquestions.com/ these guys got me through.
CPL and IR Again, you must meet the requirements of the basic reg and then you can take the tests. Beyond the scope of this post.
QFI to FI in a separate post.
